Now Is Your Time to Deliver \/ Nelson Can<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

For months now, I\u2019ve been jogging to music from the Danish band Nelson Can, a trio of women on vocals, bass, and drum. Lead singer Selena Gin\u2019s voice easily fills in for the missing guitar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding workout music can be difficult; for me, it has to hit a steady beat while avoiding monotony. The beat better be deep and it better carry some drama, the kind that makes you feel you\u2019re in your own feature film. Catchy lyrics are key when you\u2019re pounding pavement. Nelson Can has it all. It\u2019s one of the rare albums I will play from start to finish on a run. It\u2019s also great music for a drive or a walk\u2014I\u2019ve been trialing it without tiring of it since spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m not a serious runner, by any means, but this music has some serious get-up-and-go. In my opinion, their best album is Now Is Your Time to Deliver.<\/em> From the rallying drumbeat of \u201cMiami\u201d to the metal grandiosity of \u201cGlorious\u201d to the final, tart-cherry licks of \u201cYou Don\u2019t Know\u201d, this is an album that will lift you up and set you back down, only to press replay. These are battle songs for the righteous human spirit in all of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHere to Stay,\u201d<\/a> for example, has a beautifully oily bassline and lyrics to boil blood:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here you come with your guns<\/em>
Here you come to make us afraid<\/em>
Keep on walkin\u2019, I\u2019m here to stay.<\/em>

I try to time the title song, \u201cNow Is Your Time to Deliver\u201d<\/a>, for an uphill segment of my jog. This song feels your pain and calls you up to absolutely conquer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evidently, Nelson Can released only two albums and some singles before disbanding in 2020. Selina Gin has recorded some solo work, but I find it pretty tame compared to her big, raw artistry with Nelson Can. The band\u2019s two albums (the other is called So Long Desire) <\/em>are fiery gems. They carry hints of punk and metal but are essentially good old-fashioned rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Picture working out or\u2014what do I know?\u2014preparing pasta to the undeniable growl of \u201cTalk About It\u201d<\/a>: \u201cYou. Are carrying a heavy. Respons-i-bil-i-ty.\u201d Try it, I promise you won\u2019t miss the guitar.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
